Dry Shampoos

If you’re like me, you like to stretch as many days as possible between hair washes. Yes? ? (Also does Neal somehow equate not washing my hair with not showering? Which is NOT true. Why don’t men understand the concept of body showering? Is someone else’s partner telling them this all time?)

Extending between washes does wonders for the health of your hair. In fact, it can help reduce oiliness over time and help control frizz. Not to mention, cutting down on washing, drying, and styling times is SO much quicker and easier, right?

Well, I’ve tried A LOT of dry shampoos in my day, and four, in particular, have stood out in my rotation lately, so I thought I’d make a great post in case you’ve been in the market for a great dry shampoo too!

My four current favorite dry shampoos:

R & Co Spiritualized Dry Shampoo Mist:

Favorite Dry Shampoos - R & Co

This dry shampoo spray is hands down the most effective for CLEANING your hair. It’s a mist, so it wets your hair at the roots, but when it dries it’s basically like you just washed it. It’s magic. Plus, it’s essentially like a micellar water for your hair, so it really “cleanses” your hair, if that makes sense. For an extra strong effect, spray your roots and then blow them out with a hair dryer and a round brush.

A disadvantage of this product is that it does not give volume or texture your hair at all, which, as we know, are the main added benefits of dry shampoo. However, when it comes to stretching as much as possible between washes, this really can’t be beat.

With this mist (for cleansing) in combination with the R+Co Dry Shampoo Paste (for volume) below, I have been able to stretch my hair 4 days between washes!

As you will notice, this is one of two R+Co products in this roundup and they are some of my favorite hair care products. They’re also a cleaner brand, which is obviously a big win in my book, because they’re really high performers too! Their products are sulfate-free, gluten-free, certified cruelty-free, paraben-free, and vegan.

Note on where to buy this: Strangely, Amazon reviews are mixed on this, so you might as well avoid buying it on Amazon. (I always check reviews of beauty products on Amazon to make sure they match up with reviews elsewhere – if they don’t, something sketchy might be going on! 99% of the time that’s fine, but maybe I have Be careful in this case? Sometimes it could be rigged/fake!) Some of the Amazon reviews say the product doesn’t work at all, which I know it does, and it has 5 star reviews everywhere else, so just be careful! I would buy it from Dermstore.com and many local salons carry the brand too! (I usually buy mine at my salon, Sine Qua Non!)

R & Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste:

dry shampoo paste

Okay, I admit it, this is a product that I bought mainly because curiosity got the best of me, not because I really expected to like it. What would a dry shampoo PASTE look like?!

The answer: AMAZING.

It’s one part dry shampoo, one part styling paste. So it’s fantastic for both absorbing excess oil and adding amazing volume and texture. In my opinion this works better than any other volumizer I have tried. I even add this to clean hair for both volume and texture, but also because I think it works well as a preventative dry shampoo as well. (My hair still looks freshly washed the next day!)

UseDirections: Rub some into fingertips and massage into roots as you would a wet shampoo in the shower. For texture on midsections, rub into palms of hands and work through hair, twisting pieces to emphasize beachy waves. (Doing this is also great for refreshing hair you curled the night before and gives you great waves on your head!)

Note: You can buy it on Amazon (reviews look good there so I’m sure it’s fine) or Dermstore.com.

Missio Coconut Dry Shampoo Powder:

Missio Dry Shampoo

I was introduced to this product by my friend Morgan, who runs public relations for Missio!

I love this company because not only do they have great products, but they also work to help those directly affected by human trafficking through their initiatives to educate salons on victim identification, mobilize hairstylists in beauty and donate a portion of its profits to non-profit partners. If giving back is important to you, you will LOVE this brand.

I have tried quite a few dry powder shampoos and definitely thought nothing rivaled Bumble + Bumble’s Pret a Powder (which is great in terms of performance, not the CLEANEST product out there, not horrible, but not super clean either), but I decided to give it a try, and I’m so glad I did!

Use a combination of natural powders to absorb oil and add light volume. It also has vitamin B3, bamboo and green tea powders to help soothe, clarify and promote healthy hair growth. This is also the CLEANEST product in this group (even the fragrance is natural). So if you are looking for something with all-natural ingredients, this will be the product for you!

Living Proof Dry Shampoo Spray:

Favorite Dry Shampoos Spray

I would say this is the best all-purpose product that covers ALL the bases: cleansing, volumizing, texturing. If you want as few products as possible, this is great. It’s high yielding and I love the way it smells.

I’d label it a “cleaner” product, even though it’s better than many hair products in terms of cleanliness (it’s paraben-free, phthalate-free, silicone-free, and cruelty-free, but it’s still not quite “clean.”)

The downside is that it definitely sells out faster than any of these products. It’s probably due to the fact that it’s a spray AND because it has so many different functions, that you use it more often than the other products. Just something to keep in mind if you’re looking for a product that will last a long time!

You can get this at Nordstrom or Sephora!
